Cybercrime Scammers Exploit Australia’s ReportCyber Platform to Steal Cryptocurrency
Fraudsters in Australia are manipulating the government's ReportCyber system to deceive victims into transferring cryptocurrency. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) disclosed that criminals submit fabricated reports through the platform, posing as law enforcement officers investigating crypto-related crimes.
Scammers leverage stolen personal data to impersonate AFP agents, creating a false sense of urgency to pressure victims into moving funds. They reference bogus case numbers and direct targets to send digital assets to non-existent 'SAFE' wallets, exploiting the legitimacy of the ReportCyber platform to bolster their credibility.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is combating the surge in crypto fraud, identifying approximately 130 malicious websites each week. Detective Superintendent Marie Andersson of the AFP emphasized the speed and sophistication of these operations, which are designed to erode trust in legitimate crypto transactions.
